# Weekly field notes: choose an owner, bound the run, check the result

A specialist reply, a stopped loop, and a JSON-shaped answer each need a different check. This week we connect three live guides into a small exercise: name the agent responsible for the answer, define how work stops, and verify the terminal result before using its payload.

## Key takeaways

- Use an agent as a tool when a manager should retain the final answer; use a handoff when the specialist should take over the current turn.
- Treat turn and spend limits as separate controls, and give a capped run an explicit recovery outcome.
- Accept structured output only after checking the terminal result and the required payload; a success label alone can still accompany missing data.

## Decide who owns the answer before delegating

Our delegation guide compares two OpenAI Agents SDK patterns. With agents as tools, the manager retains conversation control and combines specialist results. A handoff makes the selected specialist the active agent for the rest of the turn. Both patterns can coexist, but their responsibility boundaries differ.

Illustrative exercise: a support request asks about a charge and a possible refund. Write down which agent must produce the final response before wiring either specialist. If a manager must reconcile both answers, keep the specialists as bounded tools. If a dispute specialist should conduct the next exchange directly, make that handoff explicit. In either case, enforce authorization at the action that changes an account; choosing a delegation pattern does not grant permission to issue a refund.

## Give a capped run a useful stopping point

Our turn-limit guide separates loop control from cost control. The Claude Agent SDK offers maxTurns/max\_turns and maxBudgetUsd/max\_budget\_usd as separate settings. A cap produces a terminal result identifying the limit; a single-shot query then raises. Handling only the final successful answer leaves that stopping path undefined.

Illustrative exercise: give a read-only review bot a small diff and a bounded tool list. Define a record containing the inspected revision, completed checks, unresolved questions, and terminal outcome. Deliberately stop a test run before it finishes and inspect that record. Continue only when its next action is clear. Repeatedly reading the same files is a reason to fix the loop, rather than automatically increasing its allowance. A useful checkpoint preserves work without presenting an unfinished review as approval.

## Check the result before using the JSON

Our structured-output guide covers the failure branch behind a schema-constrained answer. Anthropic documents error\_max\_structured\_output\_retries when attempts end without valid output. Its current guidance also warns that a success subtype can lack structured\_output. Check both the terminal result and the required payload before treating the answer as usable data.

Illustrative exercise: test a review consumer with three saved fixtures: a valid verdict, an exhausted-validation error, and a success result with no payload. Only the first should reach the verdict handler. The others should preserve the failed run identity and request a specific correction or human review. Validate application rules separately, such as whether an order exists or the requested refund is authorized. A schema can describe a field without proving that the proposed business action is correct.

## This week on BotBento

The three related guides are live in the BotBento blog, with primary sources and illustrative examples. Together they provide a practical review sequence: identify the answer owner, define the stopping outcome, and inspect the final payload before acting on it. The exercises in this issue are proposed checks, not measured customer results.

BotBento remains a pre-release workspace. This issue does not announce general availability of delegation, SDK integrations, or automated refunds in BotBento. The newsletter has its own confirmed subscription, separate from early access; its public archive is available without subscribing. Email dispatch follows archive deployment and the private weekly delivery checks.
